Suggestions and tips for hiking in Zillertal

Hiking trails in Zillertal can be used in summer and winter. We have put together some of the best hiking routes in Zillertal. Enjoy the wonderful natural landscape and mountains here in Zillertal on a hike together with your dog.

Walks direct from the Hotel Magdalena

Zillerpromenade

It's possible to walk the entire Ziller Valley in a northerly (Fügen-Strass) or southerly (Mayrhofen) direction along the River Ziller without any climbs. In total, there are 60 km of footpaths along the valley on the left and right banks. If at any time during your walk you are unable to continue, you can always make use of the Zillertal Railway. The footpath along the River Ziller is only 1 km from the hotel.


Ried-Stieglerbauer-Ried

From the hotel entrance turn right towards the edge of the forest - passing Hotel Waldrand the path continues on a forest trail until it meets the road at Stieglerbauer - turn right and return to Ried.

Walking time: approx. ¾ hour


Ried–St. Pankrazkirche-Ried

From the hotel entrance turn right towards the edge of the forest - passing Hotel Waldrand the path continues on a forest trail until it meets the road at Stieglerbauer - a short section on the road - then you turn off on to a footpath to Platzlstall (from here you can already see the Church of St Pankraz) - the path takes you along the edge of the forest to the church. Alternative return route: walk through the village of Uderns - via the Mitterweg back to Ried.

Riedbergkapelle–Pension Schönblick

From the town centre towards Kaltenbach as far as the Riedbach bridge - turn right before the Riedbach bridge into the forest - the path (with Stations of the Cross) takes you to the Riedbergkapelle - from the Riedberg Chapel the footpath goes to below the farmhouse side - from there on a road with little traffic back to Pension Schönblick. The forest footpath at Ried has street lights.

Ried-Riedbergkapelle-Ried - Walking time: approx. 1 hour
Ried-Gasthof Schönblick-Ried  - Walking time: approx. 2 ¼ hours


Ried-Kaltenbach-Stumm-Ried

From the town centre in Ried towards the railway station - passing the station follow the signs to the Zillerpromenade. At the Zillerpromenade turn right towards Kaltenbach - after the footbridge in Kaltenbach turn left - along the River Ziller as far as the new by-pass - over the bridge and then turn left towards Ried.

Walking time: approx. 1.5 hours


Ried-Uderns-Stumm-Ried

From the hotel go towards the station - passing the station follow the signs to the Zillerpromenade - turn left towards Uderns as far as the Schäffstall bridge - after crossing the Schäffstall bridge turn right on the footpath towards Stumm - at the new by-pass bridge right again over the bridge to Ried.

Hikes in the Lower Ziller Valley

Nature Trail at Hart im Zillertal

The Nature Trail invites you to see, hear, smell and feel things in the surrounding countryside. Listen to the sounds and voices of the forest. Immerse yourself if the variety of colours and forms, smell the fragrant flowers, earth, resins and musty foliage; and use your hands to touch the various secrets of the forest.

The special features of the landscape are explained on information boards and can be experienced at 15 stations along the route, giving you the opportunity to actively experience the forest habitat and its inhabitants. The Nature Trail comprises two linked circular routes - the 2km north circuit and the 2.5km south circuit - Schleier Waterfall.


Long Valley Walk

Starting point is the 'Geimdehaus' in Strass, head west as far as the pedestrian crossing, then on the 'Rotholzerstraße' road towards Rotholz, passing Gasthof Knapp and the last few houses and heading west, left along the road is a path the leads into the forest, continue to Kappenhof in Rotholz, towards Lindenallee, in an easterly direction once again and turn left at the junction for Inndamm (cycleway and footpath), keeping east past the pumping station and water treatment works, along the River Ziller in the direction of Schlitters to Lake Schilitter, passing right of the lake along the fields via Seehüter and Watsch back to Strass.

Walking time: approx. 2.5 hours


Maria Brettfall -Ellerboden-Öxeltalweg -Rotholz –Strass

Starting point is the 'Gemeindehaus' in Strass, via the Kirchsteig to district of Astholz, from there up to the Maria Brettfall Church of Pilgrimage, continue up to Ellerboden (a short climb on the right through the forest leads to a lookout point), follow the path slightly to the right until you come to the 'Öxeltalweg' road, down to Rotholz, turn right after the first two houses, via a forest trail back to Strass.

Walking time: approx. 2.5 hours


Strass –Schlitters –Strass

From the Tourist Information Office along the path towards Zillerpromenade - turn right before the Ziller Bridge towards Fügen/Schiltters - a cycleway and footpath leads through meadows to a bathing lake at Schlitters (lakeside cafe) - at the 'Seecafe' turn left towards Schlitters as far as the bridge to Bruck - after crossing the bridge turn left - the path takes you back to Strass along the River Ziller.

Walking time: approx. 1 ¾ hours


Short Valley Walk

Starting in Strass, initially on the 'Rotholzer Strasse' road towards Rotholz, then a forest trail, at Kappenhof return to the road, short climb over Grausbühel, right along the Retten stream down to church at Rotholz, through courtyard of Schloss Thurnegg, along Lindenalle back to Strass.

Hikes in Gerlos

Schwarzachtal - Gerlos Gmünd

Walk the romantic forest trail along the Gerlos Stream from Gerlos to Gmünd towards Hotel Kröller. Once there, cross over the road and turn right to Hotel Almhof. Follow the single track road passing Hotel Almhof, continue walking as far as the turning for 'Seemeile': Take care on the descent to the reservoir dam (good shoes!). After the short tunnel gallery, right along the footpath (next to the main road) to Gasthof Kühle Rast. Or you can turn left after the tunnel and walk beside the edge of the Gmünd Reservoir. Once you have returned to Gmünd, cross over the footbridge to Westernreitstall - passing it, the path leads back up to Hotel Kröller.

Wimmertal in Gerlos

The Wimmer Valley is in Gerlos-Gmünd. The entrance to the valley is opposite Hotel Kröller. The path climbs somewhat steeply for the first few metres, after which the walk into the valley, past Eggehtenalm, is easy. After about 1/2 hour you come to the "Wimmertalalm" refreshment stop. Enjoy the wonderful views of the Wechselspitze and Mitterjoch mountains.

Krummbachtal in Gerlos

This tour could also be called the 'snack tour' because you can even visit 3 refreshment huts. Passing the valley station of the Isskogel cable car, you walk on the road following the Gerlos Stream to the Gerlos toboggan run. From here the road goes left uphill to Gasthof Almstüberl with a wonderful panoramic of the Schönach Valley. Continue to follow the path, crossing the Krummbach ski run and continue walking on a goods track to the turning for "Prölleralm". Following the left-hand path and after a climb of about 20 minutes you reach the picturesque ski hut with its large sun terrace. If you continue to follow the footpath along the stream, after about 30 minutes you reach the refreshment stop at Krummbachrast. (own cheese production)

Wildgerlostal- Stausee Durlaßboden

Starting from the valley station of the Isskogel cable car, walk on the road along the Gerlos Stream to the toboggan run. From here a level footpath forks to the right. By following it you reach the dam of the Durlaß Reservoir in about 45 minutes. After crossing the main road, you can either climb the steps to the top of the dam or go up the narrow access road. A wonderful view over the frozen Durlaßboden lake awaits you, as well as the cosy "Seestüberl" restaurant for refreshments.

Zillerpromenade to Zell am Ziller

Trail No. 1 Leisurely footpath, both sides of the River Ziller

Walking time: about 1.5 hours


Dornau-Rauchenwalder-Gstan-Hochsteg

Trail No. 12b Penkenbahn cable car (valley station) - Pension Rauchenwalder Hof - main road - Kohlstatt bridge - Mariensteig - Gstan - bridge - Hochsteg.

Walking time: approx. 1.5 hours


Wiesenhof

Trail No. 40; Oberkumbichl - Stilluppstraße road - Wiesenhof turning - forest trail - Gasthof Wiesenhof.

Walking time: approx. 1.5 hours


Zillergrund - Gasthof Zillergrund

Trail No. 45; Oberkumbichl, continuing left and along the River Ziller to the Kröbas bridge to Gasthof Zillergrund, return via the Zillergrundstraße road.

Walking time: about 1.5 hours


Ginzling-Innerböden

Ginzling village - about 1 hour on a footpath or 1.5 hours on the forest road to the refreshment stop at Innerböden.

Walking time: approx. 1.5 hours


Brunnenstube

Trail No. 9; Horbegbahn cable car station - Kleinschwendberg - road - Gasthof Brunnenstube.

Walking time: approx. 1 hour


Rastkogelhütte

Trail No. 18; Zillertaler Höhenstraße - Gasthof Mösl or Atlas Sportalm (depending on snow conditions) on to Rastkogelhütte.

Walking time: approx. 1.5 hours


Tristenbachalm Ginzling

Trail No. 521; From Ginzling on the forestry road through the wildly romantic Floiten Valley to Tristenbachalm.

Walking time: approx. 45 minutes


Brindlingalm

Trail No. 302a; Gasthaus Mösl, Schwendberg - approach road Höhenstraße - turning to Brindlingalm - forest trail - Brindlingalm.

Walking time: approx. 1.5 hours


Ahorn Panoramic Circular Trail

Ahorn summit station - White Lounge - Panorama Platforms.

Walking time: approx. 1 hour


Circular Trail Ramsau-Bichl

Valley station of the Ramsberg ski lift - River Ziller - Zillerpromenade - underpass - "Bichl" train stop - edge of the forest - starting point at the Ramsberg lift.

Walking time: approx. 1.5 hours


Circular Trail Mayrhofen-Hollenzen

Dursterstraße - edge of the forest - forest trail - Dorfbrunnen Hollenzen - meadows - hiking track to Mayrhofen.

Walking time: approx. 2 hours
